The Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College and Hospital is one of India’s most historic and distinguished institutions, where both Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine are taught and practiced under one roof. Established in 1883 by Hazeek-ul-Mulk Hakim Abdul Majeed Khan Sahib as Madrasa-e-Tibbia, it was formally inaugurated on 23 July 1889 by Shri R. Clarke, the then Deputy Commissioner of Delhi. The curriculum from its inception included the study of Modern Medicine and Science, marking it as a progressive centre of traditional and modern healing education. Later, the institution was re-established by Masih-ul-Mulk Hakim Ajmal Khan Sahib in a new building at Karol Bagh. The foundation stone was laid by His Excellency Lord Hardinge, the Viceroy of India, on 29 March 1916, and the college was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on 13 February 1921. Located in central Delhi (Karol Bagh), the college and its 300-bed hospital occupy a sprawling 33.33-acre campus, which houses three main buildings — administrative, academic, and hospital blocks — designed in a graceful blend of Mughal and British architectural styles. The campus also includes a herbal garden, hostels for boys and girls, a mini stadium, and staff quarters, making it a self-sufficient and vibrant educational environment. Initially, the college and its associated facilities were managed by a board constituted under the Tibbia College Act, 1952. Later, under the Delhi Tibbia College (Take Over) Act, 1998, administrative control was transferred to the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, effective from May 1, 1998.
