PlayStation: Will There Be No More New Games

The gamer’s share is heavy: every year, a new tragedy. Companies cheat, hyped hits go awry, and long-awaited sequels get pushed back. There are always reasons to panic, and now consumer anger has spread to the PlayStation, which is thinking about another remake. The console wars seem to be over, but Sony is still fighting for its survival, and its opponent is still the same, only even angrier and with a bottomless wallet. What’s going on in the gaming world?

Sony has long dreamed of becoming a truly international giant in the entertainment industry, but having achieved huge success with the PS4 in the US and Europe, it somehow did not notice a string of embarrassing defeats at home. Moreover, as if in order to finally humiliate the eternal counterpart, in Japan, the Xbox, which was previously generally perceived as something like a manufacturer of a super-powerful Blu-Ray player, gradually began to succeed.

But do not rush to write off the PlayStation. Her decisions may seem ill-conceived, even desperate, but in reality, this is only an illusion. Lately, it really seems like the risks associated with brand new IPs are scaring publishers away. Remakes come out with surprising frequency, resurrecting everyone from SpongeBob to Krypto from Destroy All Humans. Remakes are cheaper and almost guarantee payback. It’s annoying, but it’s hardly a new phenomenon. Let’s rewind almost ten years ago, and journalists then just as well cursed that only remasters were coming out on PS4.

Is everything wrong with the PlayStation?

2022 – pleased the players with the long-awaited Gran Turismo 7, the amazing Horizon Forbidden West, and God of War Ragnarök, but did not give a single new franchise. What the future will bring is hard to say, but one thing we know for sure: there will be many re-releases and remakes. Seems to be even more than before. Let’s look at the statistics of recent years: almost every year we were pleased with two brand new brands that sometimes enriched their publishers, but were most often forgotten, while high-profile sequels almost caused mass hysteria. This year there were no new products at all, and instead of inventing their own, the company is increasingly relying on existing mascots and recognizable characters from the Marvel Universe.

Does this mean that there will be no new games, and we will be mired in remakes? Unlikely, although there will be fewer of them. You can see that there are fewer low-budget experiments – Concrete Genie was an ideal way to come up with something new without distracting from blockbusters, but apparently, it did not become a success, and now there are no releases from small studios, nor low-cost remakes in the spirit of MediEvil.

The PlayStation is in a difficult situation when it is expected to “respond” to high-profile purchases by Microsoft and the real moves of the alpha male, although, in general, there is nothing to prove to it: there are 100% more exclusive games than on Xbox, and consoles fly apart at the speed of light. The trend of pointless remakes is frustrating, but nothing new.
