As soon as we reach the last semester of our degree course the common question starts occupying our mind. What to do after completing that? We find ourselves standing in between a cross road and confused about which way to go.
In this article we will discuss various options available after pursuing B.Tech which is basically a four years undergraduate degree course after which student gets the designation of “Engineer” in various fields. One may be pursuing B.tech in various disciplines:

The career scope after B.Tech is really good . There are many public and private firms like BHEL, SAIL, TATA Motors, GAIL, TCS, HPCL and CPCL etc. which recruit specialised engineers and offer really good salary depending on their knowledge and experience. The starting salary can be anything between rupees 20,000-50000, but after you gain some experience a graduate engineer can earn upto Rs 5 lac to 10 lac per annum depending on the organisation you are working for and your expertise.
Here are some options which you can opt for after completing B.Tech:
1. GO FOR FURTHER STUDIES M.TECH
One of the option best option after any undergraduate degree is opting for the Higher studies and that’s after B.Tech is to select your field and excel in it i.e go for M.Tech or any other professional degree. Start preparing for National Level Entrance Exam Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE). It is an online exam which on qualifying, provide various opportunities for admissions into M.Tech courses from top engineering institutes such as IITs, NITs and CFTIs etc.
Also there are some private institutions which provide admissions to different courses in M.Tech.
2. APPLY FOR CAMPUS PLACEMENT
Campus placement is a program in which different companies recruit fresh talent on the basis of test, interview or group discussions from educational institutes and provide jobs to students who are just going to finish their degree.
If you don’t want to go for higher studies and more than an average student you can fill the form and apply for campus placement. There are about 800 companies which recruit more than 1 lakh fresh graduates in India from different institutes every year.
3. PREPARE FOR CIVIL SERVICES EXAM (UPSC) OR STAFF SELECTION COMMISSION EXAM (SSC)
If you want to go for a government job as there is more job security than private then you can always apply for Civil Services Exam (UPSC) or Staff Selection Commission (SSC). It needs lot of hard work and practice to qualify the exam. The questions are based on Numerical Ability, Reasoning, English, General Awareness and Computer Applications. You have to clear and qualify the interview and large number of job vacancies are available after this procedure.
4. STUDY ABROAD
Another option after completing B.Tech is to go abroad for higher studies as the opportunities provided abroad are much better than here. We have already covered in detail in “For Indian Students: Traveling Overseas for Studying?” for admission in universities abroad especially US and Canada appear for TOEFL, IELTS or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). It is an international level exam conducted by ETS. It covers Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Also there are many scholarship schemes provided by the government which provides half or full funding of education expenses, go for them too.
5. MASTER OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (MBA)
If wanna start fresh, have lost interest in engineering subjects and have no further plans to go for M.Tech then you may choose MBA. To get admission in reputed colleges like (Indian Institutes of Management) IIM one have to qualify Common Admission Test (CAT). Pursuing MBA after engineering will make you a blend of technical and managerial skill which can further help you if you wanna go for your own business.
6. START YOUR OWN COMPANY
Starting your own company is also an option which needs strong financial background, you can be your own boss and start your own company or startup by gaining some experience. It will need a lot of hard work and ups and downs and the risk of success and failure will always be there as compared to job. Make up your mind by checking all pros and cons and take a wise decision that will be all yours.
7. BE OPEN TO OTHER OPTIONS
Other things for B.Tech graduate is to join as a lecturer in an Technical or Engineering College, call center jobs or some software company. It will be easy to get a job on the basis of your communication skills and your knowledge. In the beginning salary may be not according to your expectations, but you can always go for higher studies or short term diploma courses if you wish through some correspondence courses to get a jump in your salary package.
After B.Tech you can also join hardware industry, journalism and IT industries too according to your course or specialisation. If you love your country and have courage and passion to do something for it, then join Indian Army. Prepare and qualify the exam Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) which makes you eligible for job in defence wing.
8. CHASE YOUR DREAMS
If at any point of time, you have started believing that engineering is not meant for you and you were pushed to it by parents or others, then go for your own dreams after being graduate. You can pursue your hobby in art and craft, literature, writing, photography also there are many more opportunities in Research field or any other work that you love to do and excel in that and make your career in it. Apart from enjoying you can make sufficient money if you have the talent and zeal to do it.
9. OPEN YOUR OWN COACHING CENTRE
What about teaching, you can always pursue it as your career and earn handsome money if you can teach well. Today our country is really short of good teachers and students really need good tutors for technical subjects.
Open your own coaching centre and teach students subjects like Mathematics and Physics or any Technical subject of B.Tech. As tutoring is in vogue and also a noble profession, in addition you also establish your name. Another thing to do can be to join some NGO (Non-Government Organisation/ Not-for-profit Organisation) if you want to help poor and needy people of the country and bring some change in their lives with your technical skills.
Every one is different and have different motives in life so make up your mind where you want to see yourself in future and choose your path wisely.
